The country of Software

Uruguay is the country that exports most software per capita in the world. The country invested early on IT, and has since been the leading software industry in the region. The authorities worked in facilitating exportation of software, and it is estimated the increase of available professional developers in the years to come.

  • In 2008, Uruguay exported software to over 60 countries for 220 million dollars, and is a leader in this field in Latin America.
  • Asia's largest software company, Indian Tata Consulting Services, has established its headquarters for the whole of Latin America in Uruguay.
  • Uruguay with its 3 million population, exports markedly more software than its neighbors. Relatively speaking, exported 6 times more software than Brazil, and 3 times more than both Chile and Argentina.
  • The most important markets are based in Latin America, but also Western countries such as Germany, France, USA, Canada and Spain are represented.
  • Culturally, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile are close to Europe. The majority of the population are descendants of Spanish, Italians and French.
  • In 2008, the IT workforce was 10,000 people. The government has estimated a total of 100,000 people total in IT over 15 years.
